tooth extractions for children
Tooth Extraction for Children: A Gentle Approach
At our practice, we understand that tooth extractions can seem intimidating for both parents and children, but we take every measure to make the procedure as gentle and comfortable as possible. A tooth extraction may be necessary for a number of reasons, such as severe decay, trauma, overcrowding, or to make space for proper alignment of permanent teeth.
Our Gentle Extraction Process:
1. Numbing the Area: Before the procedure, we use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth, ensuring your child feels no pain during the extraction.
2. Calming Environment: We offer options like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help anxious children relax during the procedure.
3. Gentle Removal: Using specialized tools and gentle techniques, we carefully remove the tooth with minimal pressure to ensure your child remains comfortable throughout.
Post-Op Care:
After the extraction, we provide detailed instructions to ensure a smooth recovery:
-
Bite on Gauze: Your child will need to bite down on a gauze pad to control bleeding for about 30 minutes after the procedure.
-
Avoid Rinsing and Straws: For the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing the mouth or using straws, as this can disrupt the healing process and dislodge the blood clot.
-
Eat Soft Foods: Stick to soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes for the first day or two.
-
Keep the Area Clean: After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water to keep the area clean. Continue brushing, but avoid the extraction site until it heals.
-
Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain medication like children’s ibuprofen can help manage any discomfort.
Tooth extraction is often a necessary step to protect your child’s oral health and ensure that their permanent teeth come in properly. Our caring team is here to make the process as easy and comfortable as possible, and we are always available to answer any questions you may have during your child’s recovery.
