Tooth Brushing

Brushing & Flossing Instructions

Children’s hands and mouths are different from those of adults, so they need toothbrushes specifically designed for them. Both adults and children should use toothbrushes with soft, rounded bristles for gentle cleaning. It’s also important to replace your toothbrush every three months.

For infants, gently wipe their teeth with a moist, soft cloth or gauze. As they grow, switch to a child-sized toothbrush and use a small, rice-grain-sized dab of toothpaste. By the time your child is two or three, you can begin using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and teach them how to rinse with water.

When brushing, hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the teeth and gums. Use short, back-and-forth strokes about the width of half a tooth. Follow these steps for thorough brushing:

  • Brush the inside and outside surfaces of each tooth, both top and bottom.

  • Hold the brush flat to clean the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

  • Gently brush the tongue to remove debris.

Flossing is also an essential part of your child’s daily routine. It helps clean between the teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach, removing food particles and plaque. By flossing daily, you can help prevent cavities from forming between the teeth, keeping your child’s smile healthy and strong.

For many toddlers, brushing can be a challenge. Here are some tips to make it easier:

  • Let your child brush your teeth at the same time.

  • Allow them to choose a few toothbrushes with their favorite characters and let them pick one each time they brush. This gives them a sense of control.

  • Encourage your child to brush their own teeth first, then offer to help.

  • Read children’s books about brushing to make it more engaging.

  • Make it a family activity by having everyone brush their teeth together.

To help children understand the importance of brushing, you can let them eat or drink something that temporarily “stains” their teeth and then have fun brushing it away. It’s also helpful to establish a consistent “tooth brushing routine” and stick to it daily.
